L3 Communications Holdings has been granted a $2.04 billion contract by Pentagon. L3 would provide tactical transport aircraft to service the US Army as well as the

Massachusetts based Raytheon had partnered CASA, a subsidiary of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. NV, (EADS). L3 would build 78 C-27J Spartan cargo planes, which would replace C-23 Sherpa, C-36, a few C-12s and other established transport aircraft s like Boeing’s CH-47 Chinook.
