A Report on Endeavour 2011, an Initiative by The Students of IIPM-Bangalore in Association with Industry Experts to bring to light The Formula to Acquire The Right Talent for an Organisation

The emphasis was on the need for change in nomenclature of recruitment and staffing, which can be replaced by ‘strategic talent management’, because an organisation has to be very strategic in its approach for attracting the right candidates. Mr. Arjun said, “48% of social media users update their facebook or twitter at bedtime or when they get up in the morning. You get access to talent at just anytime.”

Another point of focus was that it must also be people centric in understanding the aspirations of the Y generation. On this Ms. Deepa said, “It does not matter what jobs we have, you tell us what you are interested in and we will find you a job with us.” The topics under the spotlight at the seminar were: Becoming a Talent Magnet: To ensure that you get the right mix of candidate types, study workforce demographics and adapt to the labour pool’s evolving perceptions of career types.

Leveraging Technology & Social Media: The social networking sites mostly used by companies for recruiting is LinkedIn, followed by Facebook. Recruiters have embraced the power of their Applicant Tracking Systems.

Evaluation of the Strategic Impact of the Success of Talent Acquisition: A good TA process could always help an organisation to hire better employees and improve the recruitment ROI. Read more...

AOL: THE HOUSE THAT TIM IS BUILDING

Former Google key man Tim Armstrong is cutting deadwood, exploring new businesses and being trigger happy like how. But his current assignment at AOL could prove to be a career killer.

But when on September 29, 2010, AOL acquired three Internet startups – namely TechCrunch Inc., 5Min and Thing Labs – reportedly for an amount of over $100 million, it had even the most supportive analysts questioning Tim’s logic in the acquisition. Apparently, this is a move on the part of AOL to become a pure content based entity. According to Armstrong, even though the subscription business still generates a major chunk of their revenue, it is mostly on a decline. As the new content strategy is supposed to work on the mechanism of affiliating advertisers to the content, AOL is planning to invite marketers to work with its editorial team and produce customised content. With this, Tim hopes that ad money will follow suit.

Unfortunately, even if this does work, the fact is that Tim is relocating resources in a suspiciously unproductive manner, and even a seat-of-the-pants analysis is enough to give the reasoning.

After the Time de-merger, AOL was and is basically left with two businesses – subscription and advertising. Subscription, the business responsible for generating almost all of the company’s profits (as per the latest SEC filings by AOL) is alarmingly declining by 30% per annum. It constitutes almost 25-50% of AOL’s web traffic. The advertising business, which consists of a $600 million deal with Google and is powered by the subscription business (due to w

For the win!

This one, to the mother of all Blah-Blah forums: Twitter! The microblogging service that reminded us of brevity being the soul of wit, with its 140-character limit on messages, is where you get to witness ‘change’, in real time. Recently Twitter got itself a new CEO, Dick Costolo, and even primped up its interface to make for a richer media experience. #CheckItOut!

Water is my right!

The UN declares water a basic human right. You mean it wasn’t one till now?!

In a far-flung village in Africa, women wake-up every morning and walk for more than a kilometre to fetch the basic necessity of life – water. On some days they even get lucky and find clean water. Such is life for not only the people in Africa but about three billion people in the world, who have no access to running water within a kilometre of their homes. Alarmed by the scarcity of safe and clean water, which is responsible for claiming upto two million lives every year, the General Assembly of United Nations held a summit on the human right to water for the first time and declared that access to clean water is now a human right.

In the recent past, various attempts have been made to spread awareness of saving water and electricity, but with growing population and expansion of industries, it is estimated that by 2030 the gap between supply and demand of water will increase to more than 40% (according to a World Bank report). Let us take into consideration the Indian scenario. More than half of the population resides in rural areas, where let alone running water, even access to clean water is a luxury, and people dying of water-borne diseases is a common occurrence. The fluoride and arsenic content in groundwater endangers the life of more than 70 million people and 10 million people respectively. The so-called sacred water of the Ganges has now been contaminated to an extent that contact with it may lead to skin eczema, digestive and respiratory disorders. “In the last few years, I have seen that cases of water-borne diseases have risen to a great extent. And more people in the rural areas are being affected because they don’t have access to clean drinking water. We doctors are also helpless because we cannot provide them with this basic amenity,” laments Dr. Singhal, a medical practitioner in Delhi.

India Govt. gives green signal to biggest-ever defence deal with US

India has formally cleared the biggest-ever Indo-US Defence deal , the $4.1 billion contract for 10 C-17 Globemaster-III giant strategic airlift aircraft. All decks for the almost Rs 19,000-crore deal, which will support over 22,000 jobs in the US as Barack Obama himself put it, were cleared last month, as was first reported by TOI. On Monday, the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by PM Manmohan Singh gave the final go-ahead for the contract, under which the 10 Globemasters are to be delivered to IAF between 2013 and 2015.

Capable of carrying a maximum payload of 77.5 tonnes, which can include combat vehicles, artillery guns and battle-ready troops, the Boeing-manufactured Globemasters will seriously boost India's swift power projection capabilities in its "primary area of geo-strategic interest'' stretching from Persian Gulf to Malacca Strait.

The Globemaster from "Block 19'', which India will get, after all has a maximum range of 9,200 km. "They can carry twice the load of our present IL-76 `Gajraj' aircraft (IAF has around a dozen of these Russian-origin aircraft). Importantly, they can also operate from short airstrips,'' said ACM Naik. The Globemaster deal, which some have termed "exorbitant'', will assuage the US, which is still to reconcile with its F/A-18 `Super Hornet' and F-16 `Falcon' fighters losing out to European fighters in the India's $10.4 billion project to acquire 126 jets.

Arms deals in the bag

* 2002: $190 million for 12 AN/TPQ-37 firefinder weapon-locating radars

* 2005: Rs 937 crore for three VVIP Boeing Business Jets

* 2006: $92.5 million for amphibious vessel USS Trenton, with 6 UH-3H helicopters

* 2007: $1.2 billion for 6 C-130J `Super Hercules' aircraft

* 2009: $2.1 billion for 8 P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft

* 2010: $170 million for 24 Harpoon Block-II missiles to arm Jaguar fighters

* 2010: $822 million for 99 GE F-414 engines for Tejas Light Combat aircraft

* 2010: $257 million for 512 CBU-105 sensor-fuzed weapons

* 2011: $4.1 billion for 10 C-17 Globemaster-III strategic airlift aircraft
In pipeline

* Four more P-8Is for almost $1 billion

* Six more C-130Js for over $1 billion

* 145 M-777 ultra-light howitzers for $647 million

* Multi-million dollar deal for Javelin anti-tank guided missiles

Poll khol!

How polls are becoming a national pastime

The voice of a RJ came over the radio, “A list of new seven wonders is being made, would it be right if the Taj Mahal was not on the list? Don’t let that happen, please cast your vote on these numbers right now!” This was the appeal that could be heard across all radio stations in India about a year ago, when Indians were suddenly and explicably gripped by ‘wonder frenzy’. Determined to get their ‘worthy’ contestant in the final list, it became a national mission for all to cast their vote multiple times, and exhort others to do the same. It was as if an international version of Indian Idol was being played, with Indians rallying behind their beleaguered contestant. The efforts paid off, Taj was on the list when the results were declared. Amid enthusiastic back-slapping and bouts of self-congratulations, it was forgotten that the poll was conducted by an obscure ‘for-profit’ organisation from Switzerland, which had no backing from any international body! After receiving a ‘cut’ from more than 100 million votes cast world over, New 7 Wonders Foundation (which had conducted the polls and had pledged to donate 50% of the proceeds to conservation of monuments of the world) quickly declared that it had hardly earned anything from the ‘world’s largest poll on record’ and hence was unable to fulfil its obligation. As for the grand poll, once the voting frenzy subsided, no one remembered the results, save for the fact that ‘Taj made it’!...Continue

Alarm bells

In a survey conducted by ICMR (Indian council for market research), involving about 1,000 parents in the age bracket between 30-40, living in major metropolitan cities, it was found that Indian parents are also waking up to the potential harmful effects of video games on their children. More than 3/4th of the respondents interviewed agreed that their child played video games, with 2 in every 3 parents fearing that s/he might be addicted. About 60% also said that their child regularly buys video game related products, a classic symptom of overdependence.

This is not where the sky wars end

This is not where the sky wars end. After the Jet-Kingfisher brou-haha, e-mails have been floating where another billboard (of GoAir) has been placed atop Jet’s and Kingfisher’s saying, “We’ve not changed. We’re still the smartest way to fly.” (Go on, we give you time to laugh out loud). GoAir has not confirmed that the viral marketing campaign has been initiated by them (but, isn’t it obvious!). “When elephants dance, ants too get in the way,” is what Seth has to say about GoAir jumping in. Now, that’s having some real fun at someone else’s expense!

Exim Policy

This slowdown is one reason why this target looks tough to achieve. It has negative implications for another key sector of India – textiles, which contributes around 13% to India’s exports. During Apr-Oct 2006, RMG (readymade garments) exports to US grew by 6.2%, increasing India’s share in US imports to 4.3% according to AEPC. That is perhaps why the government has decided to include 16 more nations in the list to be traded with. This could be a significant boost for Indian industry, as it seeks to bridge the trade deficit.
