Defining roles and responsibilities

As with any conflict or workplace issue, before the problem can be addressed and a solution rendered, the situation has to be acknowledged and assessed.

The situation at Goldy Toys has less to do with Rajul’s stress and the conflict between him and Kaushal and more to do with lack of a clearly defined mission and organisational structure. The lack of clearly defined roles and responsibilities for senior managers is the root of all the problems. The situation presents an opportunity if the issues are open and senior management addresses their differences and sets reasonable expectations for the team.

Rajul possesses good interpersonal skills. This has resulted in better relationships with Gaurav and. Goldy. As a result, Kaushal appears to be jealous of what he may perceive to be Rajul’s favoured status. Gaurav should bring the management team together to write a mission and vision statement. Rajul can build a team on his strong interpersonal skills by soliciting recommendations from both. Kaushal and Ravi about how to strengthen the management structure, roles and responsibilities. He should address Kaushal’s concerns and behaviour in a positive way and suggest them to gather some facts. Doing this in a non-threatening way could position Rajul to grow to a role with more responsibility, such as chief operating officer. Click here to read more..

A Report on Endeavour 2011, an Initiative by The Students of IIPM-Bangalore in Association with Industry Experts to bring to light The Formula to Acquire The Right Talent for an Organisation

The emphasis was on the need for change in nomenclature of recruitment and staffing, which can be replaced by ‘strategic talent management’, because an organisation has to be very strategic in its approach for attracting the right candidates. Mr. Arjun said, “48% of social media users update their facebook or twitter at bedtime or when they get up in the morning. You get access to talent at just anytime.”

Another point of focus was that it must also be people centric in understanding the aspirations of the Y generation. On this Ms. Deepa said, “It does not matter what jobs we have, you tell us what you are interested in and we will find you a job with us.” The topics under the spotlight at the seminar were: Becoming a Talent Magnet: To ensure that you get the right mix of candidate types, study workforce demographics and adapt to the labour pool’s evolving perceptions of career types.

Leveraging Technology & Social Media: The social networking sites mostly used by companies for recruiting is LinkedIn, followed by Facebook. Recruiters have embraced the power of their Applicant Tracking Systems.

Alarm bells

In a survey conducted by ICMR (Indian council for market research), involving about 1,000 parents in the age bracket between 30-40, living in major metropolitan cities, it was found that Indian parents are also waking up to the potential harmful effects of video games on their children. More than 3/4th of the respondents interviewed agreed that their child played video games, with 2 in every 3 parents fearing that s/he might be addicted. About 60% also said that their child regularly buys video game related products, a classic symptom of overdependence.

SBI funds a series of huge response

Infrastructure Fund – Series I from SBI Mutual Funds has got an overwhelming response from the investors & has accumulated Rs.25 billion. SBI received 6 lakh applications for the fund. This fund is a three-year close-ended, growth oriented scheme & would reopen for constant re-purchases from July, 2010. The company is also planning to set up new schemes like gold exchange traded fund (ETF) & on-shore fund for overseas investment – keeping the needs of their customers in mind. The Resurgent Indian Opportunity Fund – the off shore fund launched by SBI MF, however didn’t draw notable response.
