Let’s face it! There is no doubt that Ratan Tata leads a corporate house that has built a gold-plated reputation over the last 100 years. There is no doubt that companies like Tata Tea have shown amazing daring and gumption by acquiring global companies like Tetley of UK and Energy Brands of USA. There is no doubt that the Tata Steel bid to acquire the Anglo- Dutch steel company Corus has set the cat among the pigeons. There is no doubt that the Tata group reflects a lot of the new energy and enthusiasm displayed by a confi dent India Inc. as is evident from what S. K. Roongta, Chairman, SAIL asserted as, “It is good for the steel industry both in domestic as well as overseas markets.” Also added R. Seshassayee, President, CII, “We are delighted to hear about the deal. The internationalisation of the Indian corporate sector has reached a new high with this landmark deal.” And hailing the move by Tata Steel was Sunil Kant Munjal, former President, CII who asserted, “The Indian steel industry seems to have come of age and this is a pre-cursor of what we can expect over the next3-4 years...”

Nokia’s ads

While Nokia’s ads focus on giving the brand a desi touch (remember, Dikhane wali cheez hai?), LG is trying to lure the first-time colour handset buyers (ashamed of your B&W phone? Get Rangeela!), as the Indian junta increasingly tilts toward the colourphone. Motorola, on its part, has gone ahead and roped in Bollywood hunk Abhishek Bachchan. The company feels that the Jr. B shares many similarities with Motorola: Both have a good lineage, both had a bad start (in the Indian market), and both are fast emerging as tech-savvy, iconic youth brands in the country.

Patriot Act is anti-citizens’ rights

However, in a recent judgment, the Federal judge Audrey Collins declared certain provisions within the Act to be “unconstitutional & vague”. The decision came in the wake of a legal suit filed by the Center for Constitutional Rights, on behalf of the Humanitarian Law Project, a human rights organisation that seeks to provide human rights training to the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party, and is also closely associated with the Tamil-Americans seeking removal of LTTE from the global terrorist organisation’s blacklist. So the current ruling will permit the America- based sympathisers of the Sri lankan rebel group LTTE to whole-heartedly support the humanitarian activities of their revered organisation without the fear of prosecution under the US law.

What punishment will solve this?

And all the apex sports bodies, including the Sports Authority of India, is letting it happen. Well, if they collectively cannot bring accolades and name to the country that nurtures them, they should at least be that shameful not to malign the recognition for this country. Both psychological and physiological consulting is imperative to bail out athletes from the deplorable condition and thereby to create a spirit of sportsmanship.
